Flint Side Wins Kickers' Sommerfest (Jul 12) Flint Sports Club defeated Flint Cash Now 2-1 to claim the 2010 Sommerfest soccer tournament held at the St. Joe Kickers Sport Club in Arden this Saturday. The host Kickers finished 1-1-1 by defeating Kalamazoo Bell's Brewery 3-0, drawing with the Kalamazoo Bulldogs 2-2 and losing to Cash Now 1-0. The Kickers' scorers included Dennis Ott, Rob Grashorn, Nick Lesch, Jud Soule, and Wes Barker. The Kickers Club will host the Blossomland Cup tournament final on Sun., July 25 at 3:00pm. Kickers to Host Goalkeeper Camp (Jul 6) A soccer goalkeeper camp will be held at the St. Joe Kickers Club from Mon., July 19 - Fri., July 23 from 10:00am - noon each day. Former Western Michigan University goalkeeper Chris Haack will direct the camp. He will be assisted by former St. Mary's College goalkeeper Jo Schau. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 10-18. New Buffalo HS Ranked Most Sporting (Jul 1) New Buffalo High School's girls' soccer team is the recipient of this season's Southwest Michigan Soccer Referees' Association's Sportsmanship Award.
New Buffalo was ranked highest in all three categories: players, coaches, and fans. Bangor High School was the runner-up for this award. Five Broncos To Join W-League's Kalamazoo Outrage (May 21) Five student-athletes from the Western Michigan women's soccer team have been named to the roster of the United Soccer League W-League's Kalamazoo Outrage.
Senior defender Ashley Caliendo, senior goalkeeper Julia Francy, sophomore forward Brittney Pavlica, junior forward Stephanie Skowneski and junior midfielder Alison Szczypka will join the Outrage for its 12 game schedule beginning on May 22 against the London Gryphons. Gary Parsons Finally Ready to Lead Bucks (Apr 30) After 28 successful seasons of coaching men's soccer at Oakland University, Gary Parsons retired last year and was finally eligible to become the head coach of the Michigan Bucks. Parsons was a front runner for the job to lead the Bucks inaugural season in 1996, but was not allowed to accept the role due to a conflict with coaching PDL and NCAA players at the same time. Over the Bucks successful tenure in the United Soccer League's USL) Premier Development League (PDL), Parsons has served as an advisor and confidant to Bucks Chairman and CEO, Dan Duggan. BSL Kicks Off 2010 Season (Apr 29) The Blossomland Soccer League starts its seventh season of adult premier play on Sunday, May 2. The league has one less team than last year, but will keep its dual division format, with seven teams in the first division and six in the second. As in 2009, teams will play each divisional opponent twice. At the end of the regular season the top five first division teams and the top two second division teams will compete for the Blossomland Cup. Approximately 270 players will participate in the league, just a few less than last year. Outrage W League Side Adds Talent to Roster (Mar 31) The Kalamazoo Outrage W league team announced today the signing, pending USL approval, of 7 players to the 2010 squad. Chris Adrian Named Outrage Head Coach (Mar 23) The Kalamazoo Outrage announced today that Chris Adrian will be the new Premier Development League coach for the 2010 season. Adrian replaces head coach Mark Spooner who had submitted his resignation just 8 weeks before the season was set to begin to reportedly take a similar position with the Chicago Fire. Kickers Club to Host Soccer Clinics (Feb 24) The St. Joe Kickers Sport Club will be hosting soccer clinics at their indoor facility each Tuesday during February and March. Clinics for under-8 and under-10 players will be held from 6-7pm and for under-12 and middle school players from 7-8pm. The clinics are for both boys and girls and coaches are welcome. Kickers BSL Team Tryouts Announced (Feb 16) Tryouts for the St. Joe Kickers Premier and Reserve teams will be held at the St. Joe Kickers' indoor facility in Arden on Mar. 1 and 15 from 6:30-8:00pm. Grech Picked to Lead WMU Women's Soccer (Dec 3) Western Michigan Director of Athletics Kathy Beauregard has announced the promotion of Suzie Grech from interim head coach to head coach of the Western Michigan women's soccer team. Michigan Lutheran Voted Most Sporting (Nov 21) Michigan Lutheran's varsity soccer team is the recipient of the 2009 Southwest Michigan Soccer Referees' Association's Soccer Sportsmanship Award. Their head coach, Jeff Lillo, is also the winner of the most sporting coach award. Each year the 21 area high schools with varsity soccer are rated for the sportsmanship of their coaches, players, and fans by the Southwest Michigan Soccer Referees' Association's officials who are registered with the Michigan High School Athletic Association. Michigan Lutheran scored an overall rating of 4.38 on a five-point scale. Lutheran also had top ratings in the fans' category, while Watervliet Grace Christian's players were rated most sporting.
Michigan Lutheran has won the award nine of the twelve years it has been given. For Coach Lillo this is his eighth award. BSL Organizational Meeting Date Set (Nov 5) The Blossomland Soccer League's annual general meeting will be held Wednesday November 18th at 7:00pm at the St. Joe Kickers Club. Kickers Set Tryout Date for 2010 BSL Sides (Sep 19) The St. Joe Kickers will host a tryout for potential players for the 2010 Blossomland Soccer League season on Sun., Sept. 20 at 2:00pm at the Kickers Club in Arden. SW Michigan Middle School League Sets Schedule (Sep 7) The Southwest Michigan Middle School Soccer League has announced its schedule for Fall 2009. Broncos Name Women's Soccer Assistant Coach (Aug 17) Western Michigan women's soccer interim head coach Suzie Grech has announced the hiring of Abby Crumpton as assistant coach. Crumpton comes to the Broncos after playing with the Boston Breakers of the Women's Professional Soccer League, two head coaching positions and three assistant coaching positions at the collegiate level. WMU Women's Soccer Preview (Aug 14) With a new interim head coach, the Western Michigan University women's soccer side look to build on a strong finish in 2008 and carry it over in to the 2009 season. Suzie Grech takes over as interim head coach after spending two years as an assistant with Western Michigan.
The Broncos return 10 of 11 starters from the previous season Kickers Announce College Soccer Exhibition (Aug 13) The St. Joe Kickers Club in Arden will host an exhibition soccer match between Bethel College and Aquinas College on Mon., Aug. 17 at 9:00am. There is no admission for this event. The Kickers Club is located on M-139 between Linco and Rockey Weed Rds. near Berrien Springs. Chris Haack Added to Big Ten Referee Pool (Aug 13) Chris Haack of Sister Lakes has been selected to officiate soccer matches for the Big Ten Conference. Haack, a former goalkeeper for St. Joseph High School and Western Michigan University, is currently sport director for the St. Joe Kickers Club and president of the Southwest Michigan Soccer Referees' Association. WMU Women's Soccer Releases 2009 Schedule (Jul 21) Western Michigan women's soccer interim head coach Suzie Grech has announced the schedule for the 2009 season, highlighted by nine home games including ones with Marquette, defending Mid-American Conference champions Toledo, and conference rivals Central Michigan.
